Fortec Motorsports made encouraging progress in the GB3 Championship at Spa Francorchamps (29–31 May), where Jack Taylor gained six positions in the opening race on his first competitive outing at the iconic Belgian circuit.
The Australian contested the weekend solo for the team and quickly adapted to the home of the Belgian Grand Prix, declaring it his favourite track after qualifying 17th and 13th in Friday’s two sessions.
Race One
Storms swept across the Ardennes on Saturday morning, and although officials attempted to begin the first race behind the Safety Car, heavy standing water and poor visibility forced a red flag after half a lap — much to Jack’s disappointment, as he had been hoping for a wet contest.
Conditions improved later in the day, allowing the rescheduled race to run in drier weather. Starting 17th, he gained two places early on before taking advantage of contact between rivals to move into 13th within the opening five minutes. He continued his charge with two further overtakes before a Safety Car period, then added another position after the restart. A late battle cost him one spot, but he still finished an impressive 11th, a gain of six places.
Race Two
Post race penalties for other drivers elevated Jack to 11th on the grid for Sunday’s second contest. He immediately climbed into the top 10 on the opening lap, but contact from behind at the final chicane tipped his car onto two wheels and dropped him to 20th.
Fortunately, the car escaped major damage and Jack continued, attempting to recover lost ground. A spin widened the gap to the pack ahead to almost 15 seconds, but he pushed hard to reduce the deficit significantly before running out of laps, finishing 21st.
Due to Saturday’s severe weather and a congested timetable, the scheduled reversed grid race could not be run and will not be rescheduled.
Fortec Motorsports returns to GB3 Championship action on 2–5 July, when the series heads to another Formula 1 venue — the Hungaroring, just outside Budapest.
